Vancouver's Downtown Eastside is the oldest neighbourhood in Vancouver.  The neighbourhood has a rich and colourful history and a strong community fabric.  It is also home to some of the most historically significant buildings and areas in the city, including Carnegie Community Centre, Vancouver's Chinatown and Gastown.

The Downtown Eastside hosts a number of culturally significant events, as well.  Opera Brevé ran a series of short operas at the Four Corners Savings Bank.  During the 100th anniversary of the Carnegie Centre, Vancouver Moving Theatre put on the Heart of the City Festival, which was repeated in 2006.

Regular festivals in the Downtown Eastside include the Japanese Powell Street Festival, held at Oppenheimer Park and the Vancouver International Festival held in Gastown annually.
